BPS Approved Certificate in Motivational Interviewing
(2 modules/5 days)

Approved by the British Psychological Society for the purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The Certificate in Motivational Interviewing (MI) consists of 2 modules / 5 training days that can be booked together or separately.

Two Modules of the BPS Approved Certificate in Motivational Interviewing:

The order, in which delegates attend the courses, is fixed. You need to complete the Introductory Module in order to progress to the Advanced Training.

The structure of the 5 days:

Module 1: Motivational Interviewing & Beyond (Online Introductory Course)

A two day online training course designed to empower you to motivate your clients and patients. You are taken through a range of issues, strategies and tips designed to improve your motivational strategies whatever your client group – from treatment non-compliance through offending behaviour to working with those with severe mental health problems.

This evidence-based seminar covers the following issues:

  • Practical ideas developed from MI, environmental psychology and learning theory
  • Effective evidence-based strategies for all practitioners - whether working in long term therapeutic relationships or with brief 5 minute contacts
  • Motivating clients who do not want to talk to you or even be in the same room as you!
  • How doing LESS can motivate your clients MORE
  • Prevention and management of resistance
  • How to make goal setting work and feedback more effective as motivating factors
  • How do we currently try to motivate clients: outline of common styles; strengths and limitations of such styles
  • Arousal & Motivation
  • Force-Field Analysis: A powerful tool for assessing & increasing motivation
  • Stages of change model & implications for motivational strategies
  • The MI process of Engage, Focusing, Evoking & Planning
  • Pre-Contemplators: The forgotten client group
  • The use of OARS (Open Questions, Affirmations, Reflections & Summary)
  • Working with uncertain or ambivalent clients
  • Goal setting & Feedback For Increasing Motivation
  • Understanding Maintenance of Change and ensuring that your work with clients is not simply a pattern of repeated change followed by repeated relapse

The online course comprises of:

  • A full recording of a live 2 day training with Paul Grantham
  • 10 additional video demonstrations/illustrations, including the full 40 min training video on Force Field Analysis
  • 6 exercises with feedback
  • 13 additional reading materials, including journal articles and worksheets
  • 6 online tests

Module 2: Motivational Interviewing (3 day Advanced Training)

This three day live advanced training specifically concentrates on Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills and competences. Course’s content and training methods significantly influenced by the Motivational Interviewing Training New Trainers Manual 2014, focusing on Type 3 training with some individual feedback (Type 4).

The course is designed for delegates who wish to be formally trained in MI skills.

Delegates who attend one module will be awarded a Certificate of Attendance (on the day).

To obtain the BPS Approved Certificate in Motivational Interviewing delegates need to take an assessment (comprising of additional reading and an online test) – successful completion of which will result in obtaining a Certificate of Assessed Academic Competence with 40 CPD hours and SDS Level 2 Accreditation in Motivational Interviewing.

Course Leader:

Paul Grantham
Consultant Clinical Psychologist

Paul Grantham is a clinical psychologist with vast clinical and training experience. With degrees from Oxford University and the University of Sussex, Paul trained as a Clinical Psychologist at Liverpool University. He has worked extensively within the NHS for many years as a clinical psychologist within a wide variety of services and headed one of the first UK research projects designed to help clients withdraw from benzodiapine addiction. He has subsequently worked in primary care, mental health, forensic, substance misuse and physical health as both a clinician and manager. He has trained staff in health care, social services, local government and education around the UK and abroad. Over 90,000 professionals have worked directly with him. Paul has also designed and facilitated clinical supervision systems across a number of UK services. He has a wide range of current interests including: client resistance, resource based therapies and personality disorders. He has also presented and written on a range of psychological issues - from psychological interventions post-stroke to the application of solution focused work with complex clients.

Paul is a Chartered Clinical Psychologist, a Senior Associate of The Royal Society of Medicine and is an Accredited CBT Therapist. An extremely informed, clinically experienced and humorous speaker he is known for his emphasis on the practicalities rather than just the theory of client-based work. Paul is the Chair of the BABCP Dialectical Behaviour Therapy Special Interest Group.
