Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (2 days)

NB! - Course runs for 2 (TWO) consecutive days from the date advertised.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a treatment package that combines several traditions such as early behaviourism, positive psychology and mindfulness. ACT is a trans-diagnostic model that has been successfully used to treat conditions such as depression, anxiety, PTSD, chronic pain, eating disorders and substance misuse just to name a few. ACT’s target is to promote psychological flexibility, that is, the ability to behave in a way that is consistent with one’s values even in the presence of aversive experiences (e.g. thoughts, feelings, physical pain). This is true as much for our clients as for the ACT practitioner. If you work in a context in which behaviour change is paramount, than this course will provide you with some very useful tools.

Can be taken as an individual two-day course or as a part of a Certificate in Third Wave CBT, Approved by the British Psychological Society for the purposes of Continuing Professional Development (CPD).

5 Modules of the Certificate in Third Wave CBT:

Issues Covered

ACT basics:

  • What is ACT?
  • What is ACT’s model of human suffering? (Inflexahex)
  • What is ACT’s model of growth? (Hexaflex)
  • ACT conceptualization

This part of the course will cover the philosophical and scientific underpinnings of ACT and how these inform a model of human suffering and growth. Case studies will be presented to illustrate ACT’s model of conceptualization.

Taking your first steps:

  • Engaging clients with a new approach – Creative hopelessness
  • Walking the hexaflex
    • Acceptance/willingness as an alternative
    • Values
    • Cognitive defusion
    • Observer-self
    • Present moment awareness
    • Committed action

In this part of the course, through a series of exercises and metaphors, participants will have an experiential sense of the model of growth promoted by ACT. Participants will also be able to try these techniques using role-play.

Adapting to your context:

  • Knowing where to start in the model
  • Knowing what to target
  • Delivering ACT in different modalities

This part of the course will focus on the more specific contextual details of each participant and will address key questions of how to start the work, knowing the limits and possibilities that ACT provides and how to deliver it in a way that meets the demands of the participant’s professional reality.

Taking the next steps:

This part of the course will cover advice on evidence base, further readings, where to seek more information, how to move forward as a practitioner and where to find supervision.

Acceptance & Mindfulness in Clinical Practice: ACT Model & Approach - 4 DVD Set - 6 CPD Hours

Many have described ACT as the next DBT! Don’t miss this opportunity to learn how Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can empower your clinical work. ACT takes the view that trying to change difficult thoughts and feelings as a means of coping can be relatively ineffective. However, new, powerful acceptance and mindfulness-based alternatives are readily available.

When combined with values—and committed action—ACT skills can quickly mobilize even some of our most stuck clients. The intention of the workshop is to provide you with the foundation of ACT and a beginning set of skills and experiences that will direct further development.

This seminar recording will provide a comprehensive understanding of the ACT model. Learn how the six core processes of ACT explain psychopathology and impact the therapeutic relationship and client outcomes. In addition, you will learn to formulate cases from an ACT viewpoint and apply those to your existing CBT skills.

Dr Joseph Oliver, in addition to being Director of Contextual Consulting, Joe is currently the Cognitive Behavioural Therapies Lead in the Camden & Islington NHS Foundation Trust in north London. Joseph graduated from Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand, receiving a BA (Hons) before going on to complete his postgraduate diploma in clinical psychology and PhD in 2003. His PhD research investigated the psychological processes of stress and wellbeing within the workplace. Alongside his clinical work, specialising in the area of psychosis, Joe carries out research at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, being involved in a number of trials investigating the use of ACT with people with psychosis and within the workplace. He has published numerous scientific articles and book chapters in the clinical application of ACT and is currently leading on an RCT comparing ACT and mindfulness-based stress reduction interventions for workplace wellbeing.

Joe is also current chair of the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP) ACT Special Interest Group, which promotes and develops ACT within the UK, by offering professional development opportunities, grants and training workshops. Finally, Joe has an interest in disseminating ACT ideas and concepts to other professionals and to the general public. In addition to organising ACT events for the wider public, Joe has also been developing ACT-based animations as teaching tools for training and within therapy. He has produced a number of animations that illustrate key ACT metaphors and has developed a free YouTube channel to promote these. Joe is co-editor of the book, ‘Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Mindfulness for Psychosis’ published by Wiley-Blackwell.
