Case Formulation

The course lays a great deal of emphasis on the practical application of case formulation to both case studies and/or delegates own cases.

Can be taken as an individual distance learning course or as a part of a Master Practitioner Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Approved by the British Psychological Society.

Case Formulation is the generation of “…a hypothesis about the nature of [the client’s] psychological difficulty (or difficulties) underlying the problems on the [client]’s problem list“ (Persons 1989). The generation of case formulations is a key skill highlighted within a range of therapeutic modalities from CBT to Psychodynamic Psychotherapy and is highly praised by a range of different professional bodies as a key psychotherapeutic skill. Formulations form the basis of both collaboration and the direction for therapy without which therapy can become formulaic or misguided. This one day course explores the key components of CBT Case Formulation, along with options and areas of controversy.

The day lays a great deal of emphasis on the practical application of case formulation to both case studies and/or delegates own cases.

Delegates will find their practice invigorated and enhanced by the training day and will discover the quality and outcomes of their work improved as a result.

Issues covered include:

  • The purposes of case formulation
  • Different types of formulation
    • “Off-the-shelf” RCT driven formulations
    • Idiographic formulations
  • Lower and deeper level formulations (developmental vs. maintenance)
  • Pathology based formulations vs. Outcome based formulations
  • Incorporating client strengths
  • Incorporating alternative core beliefs
  • Testing out whether a formulation is accurate
  • Problems with case formulations
  • Application of case formulations to different cases

Recently Paul Grantham participated in CBT training at Beck Institute for Cognitive Behaviour Therapy.

With 50 people in the group sending their questions for Dr Aaron T. Beck, Dr Judith Beck has chosen to ask four; and we are proud to report that three of them where from Paul Grantham!

Watch in this clip Dr Aaron Beck answering Paul’s the question on negative core beliefs.

This course is available for in-house training.

“Brilliant training - really clear video clips alongside clear lecture notes. Because I could take time to read in-between sections and time alone to reflect on my learning I learnt more than I do when 'under pressure' in a classroom setting! Fortunately I have done quite a lot of training with you - as I really rate the quality of SDS materials and the training approach I probably knew more about this topic than I realised - but it was still incredibly worthwhile as a consolidation of my knowledge base, which is now better integrated within my general understanding of CBT. One more thing - I am usually incredibly and unhelpfully anxious around 'tests' - but in this case I almost enjoyed them as the questions helped me realise I had grasped sufficiently the basic concepts taught, and helped me understand these still further...perhaps my core beliefs about educational ability, alongside more familiar unhelpful negative automatic thoughts have also been helpfully challenged! Many thanks.”

“A solid educative experience - which also touched upon and looked at case formulations from other theoretical perspectives. It provided a firm foundation to case formulation in CBT - and will act as a springboard for more study and further reading in this area. The substantial foundation of this course will enable myself to go on to further reading in this important area. Excellent course.”
